This two day intensive delves into our relationship to the ground and gravity in Butoh. We will explore  the connection between breath and gravity connecting to  the profundity of simple tasks such as rising, crouching, rolling, standing, walking and within these find a poetic and imagistic universe. We embrace the egg or primordial being, the body between life and death, 'weak' body, falling body and the necessary internal focus to accomplish these states and will also explore the impact of working with different kinds of images – abstract/concrete/sensation/ the surreal and the impossible and also work with images tied to the anatomical body working with pelvis/spine/back/head/feet/hands/breastbone.

This workshop is a rare opportunity to work with two highly experienced practitioners. Nick and Marie-Gabrielle have created work together for over 18 years, embracing productions for stage, film and site-specific works.  Open to all levels of experience and any age  15+.

Crypt2: the anatomy of architecture

Friday 6th July 8 pm

Christ Church Spitalfields

Commercial St London E1 6LY

Live Sound: Nick Parkin

Movement: Kirill Burlov and Marie-Gabrielle Rotie

Costume: Yuliya Krylova

Our activities are governed and sustained by materials and signals that emanate from beneath the ground; a pulse, an ebb, a flow, a signal, a light, or run of water, will affect us. It is a shadow or replica of the city.’

(Peter Ackroyd, London Under 2011)

The Crypt is thickly atmospheric and alive with resonant acoustics, and Nick Parkin’s improvised sound seeks to resonate with the space and connect with the subterranean archaic history layered below. Yuliya Krylova has created an evocative installation of costumes. Dancers Kirill Burlov and Marie-Gabrielle Rotie bring together their respective expertise in contemporary, experimental movement to incarnate and transform their physicality’s and the space around them, imaging the body as the architecture of death, decay and rebirth and the crypt as a space of imagination and memory.

August

Leda and The Swan

Research commences for a costume led project with Yuliya Krylova on Leda and the Swan at the National Gallery. We are working from the Michalangelo version which has been 'retired' from site, no doubt as its construed as 'too erotic?". This project is supported by the National Gallery and London College of Fashion and will culminate in performances and presentations Spring 2012.
