1995 Ice Cellar

Schloss Brollin, Germany, produced by Yumiko Yoshioka for Ex-It.

Created in collaboration with Nick Parkin.

This site specific work took place in a birch forest, at full moon, in an ice cellar which was haunted by an owl and a mummified cat. We incarnated the spirit of the cellar, becoming liminal spirits, ghosts in an alchemical albedo state, in search of the 'conjunctio oppositorum'.

We created this work during a residency for other 'European' choreographers and performers working with Butoh. Tadashi Endo commented that out of all the work presented this was the only one, for him, that escaped the cliche of 'moth eaten' images of Butoh.
